China’s rise to the world’s top 10 most powerful economies has sparked an increased demand for higher education to provide both international educational and professional opportunities. In fact, China is leading the way in terms of globally mobile students both inside and outside of China. One in every six international students now comes from China, while Asian students make up more than a quarter of the world’s mobile students. China also welcomes students from abroad, with over 489,200 international students enrolled in Chinese institutions in 2017 (Ministry of Education).

In an effort to increase the amount of international students hosted to 500,000 by 2018, China’s Ministry of Education has increased the allocated budget for the education of international students by 16.08% in 2018 to more than 3 billion yuan ($469 million). Additionally, the MoE has announced plans to allow international students studying at Chinese universities to work part time while studying. Such changes are expected to attract international talent, sparking new research and innovation for both universities, business, and the greater society.
